The Great Smoky Mountains are no longer free to everyone.

BY BRANDIE DELVISCO

The Great Smoky Mountains are the oldest in the world, and until now, it has been free to visit. Beginning March 1, 2023, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be implementing the proposed “Park It Forward Program.” These fees are going to provide much needed revenue for protecting resources, maintaining trails, roads, historic structures and facilities. The fees are going to stay in the park, making the outdoor adventure better for everyone year-round.

The cost of the tags will be small in comparison to the benefits that all who visit the park will be able to enjoy, such as $5 dollars for a day pass, $15 weekly, and a $40 annual pass. These tags are not replaceable if lost, refundable, transferable to another vehicle, or upgradeable. A license plate number is linked to each tag. This tag will allow you to park anywhere within the boundaries of the park. Tags are available for purchase online or onsite.

Those passing through the park are not required to purchase a pass. Also, those who park for less than 15 minutes will not need one. There are mixed feelings about these fees, but the overall thought is a positive reaction due to the much needed funding.
